Instagram has introduced a new rule limiting the number of hashtags users can add to their posts and Reels to five.

This change aims to improve content discovery by encouraging creators to use fewer, more relevant hashtags instead of relying on a large number of generic ones.

The company has advised creators to focus on hashtags that are closely related to the content they are sharing. This shift is part of a broader effort to prevent the misuse of hashtags, which have historically been used to boost visibility through spamming.

Hashtags have been a key feature of Instagram since 2011, helping users find content through trending topics, search, and algorithm suggestions. Previously, creators could add up to 30 hashtags per post, but that limit has now been reduced to five.

Starting today, Instagram will allow up to five hashtags in a post or Reel. The company stated that using a smaller number of more targeted hashtags can enhance content performance and improve the overall user experience on the platform.

Instagram encourages creators to use hashtags more thoughtfully, focusing on those that are specific to their content. For example, beauty creators are advised to use beauty-related hashtags to attract users interested in that niche.

Hashtags like #reels or #explore, which are commonly used, do not significantly help content appear in the Explore section or other areas of the app. In fact, the company suggests such hashtags may even harm the performance of the content.

This change follows a previous test where Instagram limited hashtags to three per post or Reel. A message appeared when users tried to add a fourth hashtag during the test phase.

Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, has previously mentioned that hashtags “don’t work” as a primary method for increasing visibility or reach. This latest update reflects the company’s continued efforts to refine how content is discovered and shared on the platform.
