Astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) exchange festive greetings and space-made customs as they spend Christmas in orbit.
Despite being away from their loved ones for Christmas, astronauts on the International Space Station seem to be having a great time. Members of Expedition 74 recorded a message to their loved ones while in orbit 400 kilometers above Earth. The crew has created their own space-based vacation spot in microgravity, so they won’t be lounging around a typical tree. During the festive welcome, stockings hung by the airlock, decorations drifted softly inside the station, and humor connected space and Earth.

A Space.com articleclaims that Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Kimiya Yui joined NASA astronauts Mike Fincke, Zena Cardman, and Chris Williams for a Christmasfilm to enjoy the holidays from orbit. While Mission Control workers around the world celebrated the celebration aboard the station, Fincke said thoughts remained with loved ones on Earth.
It was suggested that there is a strong sense of unity on board despite the absence of family. Fincke noted that despite being away from home, the crew nevertheless functions as a close-knit family, sharing meals, stories, and introspection at holidays.

A recent arrival Williams put up little decorations next to Japan’s Kibo module, and Cardman mentioned that off-Earth festivities reminded him of previous remote postings.
Cardman’s remark that the station might be orbiting a little higher than Santa gave a humorous touch. Yui also mentioned that the gathering would include Japanese cuisine. The crew all wished Earth a good New Year and a Merry Christmas.
