Google declared on Tuesday that it has introduced its Emergency Location Service (ELS) for compatible Android handsets in India. In the event of an emergency, users may contact emergency service providers—such as the police, medical personnel, and firefighters—by phone or text, and ELS will disclose their “precise location” as soon as it is started. The first state in the nation to operationalize ELS for Android smartphones is Uttar Pradesh. Devices running Android 6 and later versions were first given access to the functionality. However, in order to activate ELS, a state’s officials must integrate it with its services.
The Operation of Google’s ELS Service
The search engine behemoth said that it has enabled its ELS function on Android handsets in India. The integrated emergency service will let Android users to communicate their location by call or SMS in order to get assistance from emergency service providers, such as police, firemen, and medical personnel. According to Google, ELS on Android collects information from the device’s GPS, Wi-Fi, and cellular networks in order to pinpoint the user’s exact position, with an accuracy of up to 50 meters.
However, local wireless and emergency infrastructure operators must enable support for the ELS capability. The first state in India to “fully” operationalize the service for Android devices is Uttar Pradesh. ELS assistance has been linked with the emergency number 112 by the state police in partnership with Pert Telecom Solutions. It is a free service that solely monitors a user’s position when an Android phone dials 112.
The tech giant added that all suitable handsets running Android 6.0 and later versions now have access to the ELS capability. Even if a call is dropped within seconds of being answered, the business says that ELS in Android has enabled over 20 million calls and SMS messages to far. Google’s machine learning-based Android Fused Location Provider powers ELS.
Additionally, Google claims that ELS never gathers or shares the exact location data with the tech giant and that the capability is solely accessible to emergency care providers. As a result, the relevant authorities receive the location data directly.
In an emergency, users may share their camera feed with the responder via a call or SMS thanks to Google’s recently released Emergency Live Video functionality for Android smartphones. To gain access, the user must be asked by the emergency service provider. As soon as the respondent requests a video from their end, the prompt appears on the screen. A user can accept and offer a visual feed with only one tap.
