The Galaxy Z TriFold’s display continued to function until the test was over, despite the hinge-related problems.
The company’s first triple folding smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold, was introduced last month in a few international countries. Although Samsung said that it had completed a thorough testing process, concerns were raised over its durability because of the triple displays and their hinge mechanisms. The Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold was put through a fold test by a YouTube channel in South Korea, which tested the company’s promises. At around 1.4 lakh folds, the hinge started to give way.
TriFold Display Hinge Test for the Samsung Galaxy Z
The YouTube channel OMG_electronics livestreamed a test of the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold‘s display hinge, according to a Droid-Life article. To test the durability of its twin hinges, the tri-fold phone was repeatedly folded and unfolded for almost eight days in a row.
After about 61,000 folds, the first hinge seems to have started making audible cracking noises. After about 121,000 folds, similar sounds came from the second hinge. The video demonstrates that by the time the fold count hit about 144,000, the hinge had somewhat lost its flexibility.
At this point, the hosts allegedly asserted that the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold needed more force to remain open and could no longer be fully opened on its own.
The Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold‘s display continued to function throughout the test despite the hinge-related problems. The research also emphasizes that the phone was repeatedly folded in a brief period of time rather than over a number of years, making the testing circumstances significantly harsher than normal everyday use.
In contrast, Samsung asserts that the Galaxy Z TriFold is capable of withstanding up to 200,000 folds, or 200,000 folds plus unfolds. The software firm claims that this figure simulates 100 folds per day for five years. The durability claims of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 are still not met by this. Notably, the phone can survive up to 500,000 folds.
