A far-off red giant star around a silent black hole is surprising everyone with its peculiar spin and interior structure. The star may have clashed with another star in the past, spinning far faster than usual, according to tiny vibrations in its light recorded by NASA’s TESS spacecraft. Internal “starquakes” show that it is just around five billion years old, despite the fact that its chemical composition suggests it should be ancient. The star offers a unique window into the secret past of stars silently circling dormant black holes. It is a member of the Gaia BH2 system, which was originally discovered by ESA’s Gaia spacecraft in 2023.
The Hidden History of a Rapidly Rotating Star Revealed by Stellar “Quakes”
Researchers at the University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy (IfA) exploited these vibrations to investigate the star’s innards, according to a paper published in the Astronomical Journal. According to lead author Daniel Hey, “stellar oscillations reveal unexpected details of the star’s history, just as seismologists use earthquakes to study Earth’s interior.” The star’s exceptionally fast rotation—it completes a full spin in 398 days—indicates interactions with its partner or a previous merger, according to co-author Joel Ong.

The star’s origin is a mystery because of its alpha-rich composition, which indicates it should be considerably older. The oscillations show unexpected changes when compared to Gaia BH3, another resting black hole system. These discrepancies are incompatible with existing theories of low-metallicity star development.
Future TESS investigations will look into how silent black hole systems like this develop and whether the red giant’s quirks are the result of an earlier star merger.
