By 2035, self-driving cars might drastically reduce traffic accidents and avert over a million injuries in the United States.

Self-driving cars have the potential to reduce traffic accidents and injuries nationwide within the next ten years. According to a recent research published in JAMA Surgery, between 2025 and 2035, self-driving automobiles (AVs) might avert over a million injuries, or almost one-third of all traffic-related injuries. With over 120 fatalities each day in the United States and over 2.6 million ER visits in 2022, auto accidents continue to be a public health pandemic. Road safety is a critical problem since, in addition to human sorrow, collisions cost the country about $470 billion in medical expenses and lost productivity.

According to a study, autonomous cars might prevent over a million traffic accidents in the United States by 2035.

The JAMA Surgery paper states that the researchers used a linear regression model to forecast changes for 2025–2035 after analyzing national road traffic injury data for the United States from 2009 to 2023. They examined how far AVs could travel in total and how much safer they were than people. While the safety advantage ranged from 50% to 80%, the percentage of AV penetration varied from 1% to 10%. In the best-case scenario, AVs might save over a million injuries throughout the country.

According to researchers, self-driving cars might reduce accidents by up to 80%, but more real-world data is required.

Self-driving cars can reduce human mistake caused by distraction or impairment, which accounts for most collisions. According to preliminary statistics from businesses like Waymo, AVs have the potential to cut accident rates by up to 80% when compared to human drivers.

Researchers stressed that more real-world data will be required to refine these estimations. In order to fully comprehend the public health cost connected with AVs, further investigation will be needed to concentrate on highways, as these types of roadways represent the site of the most serious injury and mortality collisions.
